Pain and its Sources

I have talked a great deal about bliss (ecstasy) on this site, but today I want to say a bit about pain. Pain is also part of the journey, more or less according to the individual aspirant.

In general, I am free of significant pain, but today I had a surprise. I was hoping to go to an afternoon presentation by a well known channel from England, who is visiting locally at this time. But as I was getting ready, I realized I had many distress symptoms--slight headache, "iffy" stomach, pins and needles all over, including my eyes and toes. Why am I having this reaction? I wondered. This is how I often felt at the beginning of my journey. Haven't I gotten rid of these yet?

And then I realized that somewhere, down very deep, in the forgotten corners of my psyche, I had some apprehension about attending this meeting. I was having unmistakable anxiety symptoms--and then I realized that somehow I was connecting this "channel" with an event that happened years ago when I went to hear another channel (this one now quite famous). When I came home, my house had a strange unpleasant odor, a mouldy smell, and I realized that those who experience (presumably) visits from aliens often describe such an odor. Had I somehow picked up an unwelcome visitor from the session? Was I being plagued by unwelcome guests?

In a few days, the odor disappeared, much to my relief, and it never occurred again. (And I never attended another "channeling.") I think it was this hidden fear that was causing my physical upset, as if my subconscious mind were telling me not to go.

So--I went out for a walk by the city creek instead. It felt good to be out in the fresh air and to see the snow bordering the rushing water. After about forty-five minutes I stopped for a delicious bowl of soup at the local "Whole Foods" market and then walked back home By the time I got back, my "symptoms" were gone. Once more, I was reminded how subtle the connections are, and how something not even in the conscious mind can affect our current reactions.

I was also reminded that when the inner energy conduits are not clear, when we have tension and unspoken fear or anxiety, we can find ourselves in pain for sure. I think the trick is to discover the hidden causes and flush them out in any way we can.

But--the channel Solara An-RA does have an amazing youtube presentation of a Kundalini exercise. Its music will set the energies moving in bliss, and I did love listening to it as the sweet energies pulsed through my body.

http://www.youtube.com/user/SolaraAnRa

P. S. After writing the above, I listened to two of Solara An-Ra's actual channelings offered on the same YouTube site. I do not know whether or not she actually brings in presences from other planetary systems (Sirius or Andromeda), but what she says makes sense and is in fact in line with what many of us are familiar with and indeed believe--we are going through a great earth transition, we are moving into a higher plane of existence, and--for certain--our vibrations are being raised to a new level. Anyone who undergoes significant Kundalini awakening knows that these assertions are true.

And Solara An-Ra is herself a lovely, dedicated, and sincere being whose purpose is to serve the world as it moves through this time of major transformation. I wish her well!

Here is a poem I wrote many years ago, whose thought is in line with her presentation:

Waiting

The jeweled cloud sways overhead,
waiting.
Meanwhile our cells are turning
to air,
finer and finer arrangements
of light.

Poem by Susan Browne

(I put up the following poem for those who have ever had trouble sitting on a cushion and "thinking of nothing." Fortunately, Kundalini offers a very different kind of practice--one that may involve standing, movement, music, imagery, and, above all, not worrying about one's thoughts but rather enjoying connection with one's inner feelings. As my friend said, "Kundalini is God moving through your body." In other words, in Kundalini meditation you take your body with you and allow your mind to take care of itself.)

Buddha's Dogs

Susan Browne

I’m at a day-long meditation retreat, eight hours of watching
my mind with my mind,
and I already fell asleep twice and nearly fell out of my chair,
and it's not even noon yet.

In the morning session, I learned to count my thoughts, ten in
one minute, and the longest
was to leave and go to San Anselmo and shop, then find an outdoor cafe and order a glass

of Sancerre, smoked trout with roasted potatoes and baby
carrots and a bowl of gazpacho.
But I stayed and learned to name my thoughts, so far they are:
wanting, wanting, wanting,

wanting, wanting, wanting, wanting, wanting, judgment,
sadness. Don't identify with your
thoughts, the teacher says, you are not your personality, not your
ego-identification,

then he bangs the gong for lunch. Whoever, whatever I am is
given instruction
in the walking meditation and the eating meditation and walks
outside with the other

meditators, and we wobble across the lake like The Night of the
Living Dead.
I meditate slowly, falling over a few times because I kept my
foot in the air too long,

towards a bench, sit slowly down, and slowly eat my sandwich,
noticing the bread,
(sourdough), noticing the taste, (tuna, sourdough), noticing
the smell, (sourdough, tuna),

thanking the sourdough, the tuna, the ocean, the boat, the
fisherman, the field, the grain,
the farmer, the Saran Wrap that kept this food fresh for this
body made of food and desire

and the hope of getting through the rest of this day without
dying of boredom.
Sun then cloud then sun. I notice a maple leaf on my sandwich.
It seems awfully large.

Slowly brushing it away, I feel so sad I can hardly stand it, so I
name my thoughts; they are:
sadness about my mother, judgment about my father, wanting
the child I never had.

I notice I've been chasing the same thoughts like dogs around
the same park most of my life,
notice the leaf tumbling gold to the grass. The gong sounds,
and back in the hall.

I decide to try lying down meditation, and let myself sleep. The
Buddha in my dream is me,
surrounded by dogs wagging their tails, licking my hands.
I wake up

for the forgiveness meditation, the teacher saying, never put
anyone out of your heart,
and the heart opens and knows it won't last and will have to
open again and again,

chasing those dogs around and around in the sun then cloud
then sun.

Heart Aflame by Camille Maurine

Heart Aflame

by Camille Maurine

Consider that human passion is a reflection of divine
passion, the force that propels consciousness to unfold. Your desires and
passion guide you to the heart of your life. They put you in conversation with
the universe...You are
collaborating with creation to be able to give what is yours to give, and to
receive.

The heart is not just sweetness and light, violins and
valentines. It is a heated cauldron, an alchemical vessel of transformation.
Within its fiery walls the opposites meet and mate. It is a dance of passion
between life and death, love and hate, sorrow and joy, pride and shame, hope
and despair.

It takes courage to admit what is in your heart; there is so much
to feel. But this mating, with all its intensity, gives birth to your visions
and dreams. Accept the challenge and let yourself be transformed. Dance with the
fires of creation and breathe with the intensity. Step into the pyre willingly,
cackle and roar with the flames!

Betrothed (poem)

Betrothed

So at the end of the day, we give thanks
for being betrothed to the unknown
. . .
John O’Donohue

However one looks at it,
it was not easy—
that bridal night,
mingling of self
and the unknown who appeared.

Everything took place
in secrecy and silence,
at the hidden center,
the core where presence
begins.

How do you mate
with something unseen?
Become one
with what has no form or name?

The days were filled with sweetness
and tumult,
nights so intense
that passion itself
became too pale a word.

The world unfolded
in endless celebration,
a constant feast to which
the heart said yes,
the spirit yearned.

Now, old lovers,
we live quietly,
sometimes meet
and nod in recognition,
remembrance of that special time,
when we no longer knew
who was lover, who beloved.

More on Love and Fear

Recently, I posted an excerpt on Love and Fear, and this piece sparked the following response from someone who is undergoing deep Kundalini awakening. Yes, for sure, Kundalini reawakens all the old doubts, dreads, anxieties and fears--as well as feelings of profound love and longing. It shakes us up in a most comprehensive way, until we know every previous feeling, thought, and emotion that have blended into who we suppose we are. The following reflection tells us in a most vivid way what this process feels like.

I had a chance to read your blog again. You post on Love and Fear rang in my chest.

The process with K has peeled away so many of the terrors of my life. It's been like going through a lifetime of therapy in a matter of a couple of years. So here I sit, naked of so many layers that I thought were me. BUT, here I'm face to face with the biggest untruth - abject fear. A fear that permeates every cell. Primal fear. Fear, like a bottomless pit.

I'd like to report that that this fear is a stranger, but I know it all too well. It's been there running the show for decades. It was under all those layers I called "me". This "fear" has been the "fuel" for everything I've done and everything I believe. But now it's present in its rawness.

Then in strolls "love". Oh my God! Fear jumps up and rattles its chains. It sinks its teeth in deeper. It wants to chase love away. I wants me to believe that I'm afraid of love. Yes, it does feel like that because it jumps up so quickly behind it. It seems like the ultimate battle. Who will win?

All I can do is accept. Both the love and the fear. The yin and the yang. Relax so the alchemy may happen. Easier said, than done!

The Lover (for Mary Oliver)

The Lover

“My business is loving the world.”
Mary Oliver

She fills her work
with the names of things--
flowers, plants, animals
whose designations I have never
even heard of--
all this in order to love the world.

She goes forth daily, it seems,
into that internal paradise
awakened by that outward
exploration,
as if she touched
and tasted
each thing,
drew each into her body,
transformed it into
her own being,
what she is,
everything she knows.

Thus she inhabits
a shining universe,
a limitless realm
of things blossoming, moving,
opening in radiance,
filling her spirit,
her mind,
with all that light.

Poem by Janice Boughton

Those of us who follow a deep spiritual path must, of necessity, learn to walk in the "two worlds"--the world of spirit and mystical connection, and the world of outer events which we cannot afford to ignore totally. I think this poem does a very good job of exploring both of these realms, showing how the major events of our time continue to cling to our consciousness even as we are in the perfection of the world of nature--and our recognition of this perfection is perhaps what saves us from falling into despair, for we know that the inner reality is just as real and important as the outer occurrences.

Poem after a walk in the woods - Janice Boughton

I went for a walk in the woods alone at sunset
with my dog
and the earthquake in Haiti
and the health care bill passed by the senate
and a great horned owl
and at least 3 hunters in the surrounding hills
apparently trying to set some kind of a record for ammunition wasted in a one hour period

my feelings about the hunters
were different than my feelings about the owl
though a vole or a mouse might have felt
that the threat in the sounds they made
was pretty similar

and I enumerated in my mind the 4, or was it five, basic goals of the health
care bill passed by the senate, and left it to rest somewhere in the muddy
footprint left by a moose

and for awhile I walked with the ghosts of the people killed in the earthquake in Haiti
hundreds of thousands of them, covered with plaster dust
possibly more than the total number of people killed in the Iraq war
and thought of Pat Robertson, who said, and I paraphrase,
that the Haitians had made a pact with the devil and he was taking his due,
and this comment showed an unprecedented sense of poetry
because how could something so overwhelmingly sad and desperate
come of something so mundane as the subduction of one plate of earth under another?
Certainly an injury this huge in the fabric of the universe
must have been the result of divine intervention.

And I walked with the millions of people who will, like T cells and macrophages and fibroblasts in the dark body of the earth, heal, but oh so excruciatingly slowly, this deep and bleeding laceration.

and then I was just walking with my dog
who was barking at the vole she had unearthed
overjoyed with this intimate interspecies interaction
and then performing brief and truly inadequate CPR with her nose

and the owl again
and the hunters
and the sun setting through grey clouds on the stubble fields and forested hills
the golden light
on the half frozen ponds
of the place I walked
which lacked nothing
of perfection

The Poet's Face (Robyn Sarah)

The Poet’s Face

(Robyn Sarah)

And so there she is,
with her big glasses
and her hat,
her somewhat plain but
clearly intelligent face,
someone I could have
gone to graduate school with,
the features of someone I
once loved.

And she is smiling,
letting a bit of sunlight
into her eyes,
her ready mouth,
mischievous and glad
with a wry pleasure,
as if she knows a secret
hidden from the world, saying,
even though much
of the evidence points
the other way,
life can be good,
it can offer succulents
and savories,
little packets of joy,
boons to keep desolation
at bay,
even amidst the clutter,
the dust,
the silence of the moon
strolling over
the empty rooms
at night.

Judean Date Palm (poem by Larry Robinson)

Judean Date Palm

The dandelion seed needs
only the rumor of rain
to open its doors
and begin to unfold.

Some seeds, like the chaparral,
are only released
by the merciless grace
of fire and smoke.

Some must travel
the labyrinth
of an animal gut
for their casings to soften.

Still others, like the olive or date,
can sleep safely for centuries
until some crushing blow
awakens the mystery within.

I like to think that,
just before those zealots,
sure of their righteousness
and unbent before the legions
gathering on the plains below,
stepped into eternity,
one among them -
a child perhaps -
savored one final taste
of the sweetness of this life.

Two thousand years later
in Kibbutz Ketura
a young palm tree is growing
from the pit of that date
dropped on the heights of Masada
to await its own rebirth.

The Secret Teachings by Gerald Massey

I have always been fascinated by anything that contained the words "secret" or "mystery" or "teachings." Even as a child, I fantasized hiding (or finding) secret treasures, things beyond price which the world knew nothing of.

So, today, when I received an announcement for a new edition of an early work by someone called Gerald Massey (now deceased) I of course followed up by checking out the description on Amazon. In the course of my research, I came upon an amazing illustration from the back of the book and tried to copy it but was not successful. Here is the description of what the picture portrays:

THIS EXCLUSIVE PHOTO, taken from the back of the dust-jacket of The Secret Teachings, is a scene engraved on a wall in the Temple of Luxor. It shows one of the greatest of the Egyptian pharaohs, Amenhotep III “the Magnificent,” receiving the imposition of the Sa, or magnetic fluid, from the god Amun. “After having placed the peschent upon the head of the Pharaoh, who kneels before him, Amun proceeds to impose the Sa. The gods were not all equally charged with this magic fluid or life-energy. Some had more, others less, this they willingly gave to those who lacked it, and all could readily transmit it to mankind.”--G. Maspero in The Dawn of Civilization. (See ch. 20, entitled “The Hated Religion of Akhenaten and Nefertiti,” page 405 of The Secret Mysteries."
(by Gerald Massey).

Could the "life-energy"--the "magnetic fluid"--be Kundalini, and could the initiation by the god be an ancient enactment of what we today call Shaktipat? I suspect that it is. "Magnetic fluid" is an accurate description of what Kundalini feels like when it is flowing. And indeed, Kundalini is the "life-force." Kundalini has long been associated with secret rites and rituals, unusual powers, such as a Pharaoh might have possessed. And once one feels the awakened Kundalini, it often is as though one has been visited by a god or goddess.

In fact, some writers (such as William Irwin Thompson) have asserted that the erect cobra that the Pharaoh wears at tje front of his head piece represents risen Kundalini (itself often depicted symbolically as a snake which rises).

In India, from ancient times, the fully risen Kundalini was symbolized as Shiva in union with Shakti (the female aspect of Shiva) at the crown. This union occurs when the "magnetic fluid" opens the crown chakra to allow the initiate to merge with the gods.

As I read further on this site, I ran across another quote from the "The Secret Teachings" that caught my attention. It is quite different, yet also intriguing:

The following quotation from the Maitri Upanishad is one of the few attempts to describe this state of consciousness ("heavenly consciousness) or being and can serve as a rare example:

“Incomprehensible is the Supreme Self, unlimited, unborn, not to be reasoned about, unthinkable, He whose Self is space. At the dissolution of all, He alone remains awake. Thus from that space, He awakes this world which consists of thought only. By him alone is all this meditated on and in Him it is dissolved. He is that luminous form which gives heat in the yonder sun, the wonderful light on the smokeless fire, as also the fire which digests food.

“For thus is it said, ‘He who is in the fire, and He who is here in the heart and He who is yonder in the sun—He is One. He who knows this goes to the Oneness of the One.’”

I was especially drawn to the statement that the world is made and re-made by the One, who creates the universe from thought itself. Science tries and tries to discover how the world was made, but never finds the answer, because it is looking for a material origin. I happen to believe that consciousness preceded matter, and the latter resulted when that awareness chose to cast reality once more into material form.

The final sentence says, it seems, that God is in everything--the sun, the smokeless fire, and the digestive process itself. The first and last were indeed mysteries to the human (at least at that early time.) But what is the "smokeless fire"? Could it be the radiant aura that surrounds objects when they are viewed in the light of astral plane? I rather think so.

Of course, the above are all personal beliefs, but they are places I like to go in thought when I am alone.

(Note: I am not endorsing this book--just thought it was interesting to peruse some of its ideas as I followed the entries beginning from Amazon and then on to other pages and excerpts. Apparently, it is a vast tome--it is said it would take a lifetime to digest even a page. But it is now available as an e-book for those who might be interested in reading more of its contents. It is said to be based on the "oral tradition" or secret teachings, also known as the "gnosis.")

Love and Fear

The following is an excerpt from Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, well known for her work in the field of death and dying, and her co-author,David Kessler:
(from If You Don't Choose Love You Choose Fear)

If we could literally reach into you and remove all your fears – every one of them – how different would your life be? Think about it. If nothing stopped you from following your dreams, your life would probably be very different. This is what the dying learn. Dying makes our worst fears come forward to be faced directly. It helps us see the different life that is possible, and in that vision, takes the rest of our fears away.

Unfortunately, by the time the fear is gone most of us are too sick or too old to do those things we would have done before, had we not been afraid. . .Thus, one lesson becomes clear: we must transcend our fears while we can still do those things we dream of.

To transcend fear though, we must move somewhere else emotionally; we must move into love.

Happiness, anxiety, joy, resentment -- we have many words for the many emotions we experience in our lifetimes. But deep down, at our cores, there are only two emotions: love and fear. All positive emotions come from love, all negative emotions from fear. From love flows happiness, contentment, peace, and joy. From fear comes anger, hate, anxiety and guilt.

It's true that there are only two primary emotions, love and fear. But it's more accurate to say that there is only love or fear, for we cannot feel these two emotions together, at exactly the same time. They're opposites. If we're in fear, we are not in a place of love. When we're in a place of love, we cannot be in a place of fear. Can you think of a time when you've been in both love and fear? It's impossible.

We have to make a decision to be in one place or the other. There is no neutrality in this. If you don't actively choose love, you will find yourself in a place of either fear or one of its component feelings. Every moment offers the choice to choose one or the other. And we must continually make these choices, especially in difficult circumstances when our commitment to love, instead of fear, is challenged.

Having chosen love, doesn't mean you will never fear again. In fact it means that many of your fears will come up to finally be healed. This is an ongoing process. Remember that you will become fearful after you've chosen love, just as we become hungry after we eat. We must continually choose love in order to nourish our souls and drive away fear, just as we eat to nourish our bodies and drive away hunger.

- By Elisabeth Kubler-Ross & David Kessler from "Life Lessons: Two Experts on Death and Dying Teach Us About the Mysteries of Life and Living"

If It Is Not Too Dark

Go for a walk, if it is not too dark.
Get some fresh air, try to smile.
Say something kind
To a safe-looking stranger, if one happens by.

Always exercise your heart's knowing.

You might as well attempt something real
Along this path:

Take your spouse or lover into your arms
The way you did when you first met.
Let tenderness pour from your eyes
The way the Sun gazes warmly on the earth.

Play a game with some children.
Extend yourself to a friend.
Sing a few ribald songs to your pets and plants -
Why not let them get drunk and wild!

Let's toast
Every rung we've climbed on Evolution's ladder.
Whisper, "I love you! I love you!"
To the whole mad world.

Let's stop reading about God -
We will never understand Him.

Jump to your feet, wave your fists,
Threaten and warn the whole Universe

That your heart can no longer live
Without real love!

Hafiz

(from I Heard God Laughing - Renderings of Hafiz by Daniel Ladinsky)

P. S. from Dorothy--yes, what we yearn for is love--from others, from God, for self, for others, for God. And I think this is what Kundalini can in fact give to us. Even when we do not have a close human partner, we know that we are in fact loved by an inexhaustible divine source, that which gives us life and sustains us and often visits in the form of the Beloved Within. This is what Kundalini in its highest form does--it takes away fear (our sense of inner loss, our neuroses that grow from such fear, our loneliness and despair) and gives us instead a realization of overwhelming acceptance and love from that reality which most matters--the overarching presence of which we ourselves are a part.

Poems by Stacy Wills

Today I will. . .

today i will give my desire for
permanence the day off
and sit in a chapel
made of twigs and spit
today i will give my desire for
certainty the day off
and dwell in the place
of not-knowing
today i will give my desire for
security the day off,
open the windows and
let in the breath of fresh air.

Marrow

White buffalo came to me
in a dream:
give up,
give up the
illusion of control.
this moment,
this moment is a gift,
pure and simple.
savor each and
every one you are given.
suck its marrow,
and you will taste your life.

After (poem)

After

There is one thing certain.
Once you have stood
in the midst of that
searing flash,
been struck down
to earth
like a Mongol taking his bride
on the steppe,
and have lain there,
waiting,
not quite certain—

how can you ever know again
what it is
not to be blinded by the light,
never to have gone there
to the top of the snow hung peak
and felt that nameless something
descend onto your shoulders,
your breast,
even as you bent forward
in disbelief.

Enough (poem)

Enough

I think it is enough,
at times,
to go without knowing
where the end is,
what the beginning--
so long ago.

Perhaps you have friends
who can whisper
such things
in your ear,
hear little bits of
messages
in the laughter of children.

But mostly we just proceed ahead,
not remembering
how it all started,
where it is leading,
not sure
if we are the waiting animal
or the animal's passing
shadow
in the grass.

Love after Love (poem by Derek Walcott)

Love After Love

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

A Reflection on Silence and More (by Karina)

While I was searching for something else on the internet, I came across this lovely post by someone I don't know. I decided to share it with you. Years ago a friend said to me that we must all be teachers to one another. And indeed, with the internet, we are finding our teachers everywhere, sources we might never have been aware of without this modern technological tool.

I am reprinting it just as it was in the original, and will leave it to you to locate the various sites she mentions:

A gentle, loving, peace-filled silence is here
and now in this moment. It has always been this way. It is always here.

It is right here within you and all around you, a stillness, an apparent void, a seeming nothingness out of which everything arises, exists, and eventually returns. You know this. You have felt this. There is nothing more than this.

You are this. This is not some esoteric spiritual jargon about some new age philosophy or any religion or belief. There is nothing here which is mystical. There are just these words and you and the silence. This is real, now. This is right here in you, every single moment of your life. This pure silence contains you, your being-ness. This silence allows the entire universe to be.

All existence, everything that is, all matter and energy, all thought is contained in this silence. This is what some have called Truth, Infinity, Reality, Enlightenment, Nothingness, Spirit, True Self, Consciousness and Love.

This is a mystery beyond mind, beyond what the human brain can fully comprehend. Like a beautiful diamond, we can only see a few facets at a time.

This mystery is seemingly far beyond us-our capacity to understand, to know. And yet this is contained within our very selves, and this contains us as well.

The greatest wonder of this is that you and I, above all other life forms on this planet are able to be consciously aware of this reality, now. Yes, you are aware of this, though perhaps you do not believe this so. Perhaps you have not realized this. This awareness of ours, this consciousness of being, is the silence itself. There is only this.

We have spent thousands of years denying what is more present to us than our very breath, our very heartbeat. This silence permeates everything and is the allow-er of everything. The silence allows us to be and to be free. There is only this. You are this! All that you need, all that you seek, all that you hope and long for is contained in this silence.

I am mystery wrapped in the riddle of an enigma.
Just as you think you've solved my puzzle, you might just realize that the pieces, the shape and their sizes, the picture it forms, and the way they fit together are constantly in a state of change flux/reflux/unwind
I cannot be confined or defined from the bind of one's mind, nor shall ye find that I am signed on the dotted line - I am a syncretist, I harmonize, I synchronize, we can realize that I *am* kind, not blind, very much one with which you can relax and unwind, see my whole, love always as you unwrap the rind of my soul, body and mind.

Eye, * Karina Isis IX Balam * am one with Thoth and Horus. We are the same soul - metaphors for 'flight' spiraling evolution of consciousness through the alchemy of time.

Eye of God - Eye of Re - Eye of Horus

Isis = 'I' = Eye = Sirius

The Eye of Horus / Re / God refers to the ancient Mystery School Teachings of Creational Geometry encoded by Isis and Osiris and left behind with their priests in Egypt. These are the same souls who are the priests in Atlantis and other programs. They carry this genetically encoded information in their DNA - triggered now as we move back to 2012. There is addtional information kept hidden in the ancient mystery school teachings since the beginning of this reality/program. All hidden information will come forward at this time, as the Hall of Records - Golden Capstone was activated on December 12 - 12:12 at 12:12 am and pm in the Kings Chamber of the Great Pyramid. The calibration for the time clock of our reality was reset and consciousness shifted.

I am not endorsing the apparent channelings, though I do find them intriguing. One statement in especial caught my eye--the notion that certain "knowings" were implanted in our DNA for discovery at a later time. I have often wondered if Kundalini itself is such a "knowing." It remains latent in each of us until the proper moment, then activates as if it had always composed part of our being. I think many such "activations" are going on now all around us. So--"Happy Activations" for the New Year.)

Thoughts from Macrina

Bleeding Toward God

SOMETHING IN ME CONSTANLY

BLEEDS TOWARDS GOD.

THAT'S WHY I KEEP WRITING,

SLIPPING MESSAGES UNDER THE DOOR.

-dorothy walters

from "Marrow of Flame"

(The following "messages" are from Macrina, who is described below)

Here are some messages I would like to slip under your door:

1. It's ok to wake up laughing...and it's ok to wake up weeping.
2. Gratitude is medicinal but you will need to say "thank you" more than once a year to get full benefit of the medicine.
3. Forgive and the whole landscape will change. -Kathleen Griffin
4. There is a depth in you that you have not yet discovered.
5. Today, put on joy. The world needs it so much. No matter how many sorrows try to crowd it out, joy is a permanent resident in your soul. Happiness is a bit fleeting but joy is more stable because joy, as novelist Eugenia Price tells us is "God in the marrow of our bones."
6. "There is nothing in your life too terrible or too sad that will not be your friend if you find the right name to call it, and calling it by its own name, it will come upright to your side." Laurens van der Post
7. Keep vigil with your life. Guard well your heart.
8. You are a blessing; let the light of your life shine on others this day.
9. Practice waiting with patience and you may be surprised with new revelations.
10. You are a jewel of creation.

What Triggers Kundalini?

Apparently, any and everything can bring about a Kundalini awakening. Some study with gurus and teachers and apparently their energies are aroused through the practices they learn. Others, however, undergo seemingly spontaneous awakening experiences, for no obvious reason.

Sometimes personal crisis (of relationship, economic distress, health, for example) can trigger awakening. Other times, the cause is even less evident. One friend "went off" during a visit to Macchu Pichu, a trip that was obviously very exciting to her. Another experienced awakening during a spiritual workshop. Another was aroused by a guru who gave her shaktipat many years ago. Her energies then lay dormant for several decades, but recently she is undergoing energetic transformation in the form of blissful energies.

Recently I heard from two "awakened" writers--one woman had had her energies opened after taking a familiar homeopathic remedy. Another suddenly fell into a Kundalini syndrome (shaking, fear) unexpectedly at her chiropractor's office.

When I first was opened to Kundalini, I was told that I would lose interest in whatever had held my attention before. I thought this was nonsense, but soon I realized I no longer wished to be merely a professor of English literature, but rather to focus primarily on spiritual transformation. I no longer wished to read novels--life itself proved much more interesting. (I did, however, find ways to include material on "new consciousness" in other courses I devised.)

And others have parallel experiences. One psychic who had for years been able to communicate with the dead found she could no longer do this (at least not immediately after her inner shift.) Another "experiencer", from the world of business and other commercial areas, relinquished that avenue for a career in healing.

I think that what we discover is this: we are in fact called to serve in whatever way our gifts allow. We restructure our lives to achieve this goal, knowing that we are each, in our own way, part of the larger process, and though we cannot fully describe it, we are certain we are moving in the right direction.

And we feel extremely fortunate to be part of this process. As another friend commented: "It's the only game in town."

One Astrologer's Vision of the Near Future

Recently, I received this astrological reflection from a friend. I do not know who the astrologer is, nor am I endorsing the message. Rather, I thought it of interest and offer it for your own assessment. In particular, I was interested to see that much of what he says is indeed evident if we look about us at what is going on in our world at this time. We know we are in the grips of profound change in all areas--personal, political, social, economic, ecological, and spiritual. Thus, much of this reading seems to confirm what many of us have also observed in other ways.

One interesting aspect of this analysis is its correlation with the many 2012 prophecies. In fact, much of what he foresees is similar to what has been predicted by others as aspects of the great shift expected at that date. However, it is important to keep in mind that even 2012 is not in and of itself a precise date--many believe that these changes are already well underway, as the various crises of our time move toward a tipping point.

The author descibes a particular astrological alignment, one different from that postulated by many of the writers on 2012. I assume that the 2012 positioning of the sun in relation to the center of our galaxy refers to an event following the one described by this author. Both are very unusual astrological alignments--even the Mayans foresaw the unusual lineup of sun and galactic center in December, 2012.

A final note: this reading of the future of our planet is of special interest to me, speaking as it does of great changes coming about for everyone on a personal level as well as changes in society as a whole. My recent move involved such a shakeup in my life--old patterns were released, old ways of thinking and doing revised. Physical moves are always involve major transformation, and such has been the case with me. New friendships have been formed, new areas of investigation discovered.

And--I might add-that the astrologer himself appears to be living (at least part time) in Boulder, a fact I did not discover until after I had read his article. Another synchronicity to add to my growing list.

Time of Radical Shift A Look into the Coming Cycle
by Maurice Fernandez
(evolutionary astrologer)

Greetings, I feel compelled to write this note about what we astrologers are seeing coming. We are in the beginning of a very unique time in history that will redefine the foundations of our lives. The astrological circumstances are uncommon and very dramatic. Change is likely to affect every level of our being, even though each person will feel it differently and in varying degrees of intensity.

I'm writing this note so that you may make better use of this time and understand what it is about. As astrologers we are aware of cycles that affect our existence; because this coming cycle is very unique, I feel it is important to share this information. I will try to keep it simple and not burden you with a long text and excessive details.

There are multiple planetary bodies that are gradually forming a very particular and rare alignment. This configuration began to form during the fall of 2008. Politically, that time was when the economical crisis exploded and when US president Barack Obama was elected. The configuration will move into a second phase during November 2009 and January/February 2010. (Saturn will move into the Cardinal sign of Libra and will form powerful angle to Pluto in Capricorn)...

The third phase is probably the most dramatic and intense, and will occur from the end of June to the end of July 2010, when all the factors of the configuration will align together in a cross at the very beginning of Cardinal signs in astrology. (Cardinal signs are the signs of new cycles. The planets in questions are Pluto, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. These planets are slow moving bodies and therefore it is absolutely exceptional that these slow moving bodies end up all aligned in a cross on these very sensitive degrees!

In normal circumstances, some people go through changes while others continue their routine. Here the alignment is so strong and dramatic that everyone's life can be considerably affected… it is likely that your life will not be the same by fall 2010! The question that often arises is:" Is it bad, or is it good?" The answer is that it depends on the way one deals with the events: a conscious approach can make a difference.

One thing for certain: do not expect security, consistency, and predictability during this time. Reality is bound to change fast and so it is better to move with the flow, while remaining conscious of what is going on. Flexibility is one of the most important assets during this time. This influence is analogous to a gigantic wave forming…you can ride on that wave and go farther than ever expected -experience a powerful transformation that can elevate you to new grounds. But this wave can also destroy a lot of what you are currently attached to.

Redefinition may occur in different fields: you may change vocation, relationships, location, mindsets, to name but a few. New people will move into your life, current ones may leave. New ideas and projects will develop and you may feel inspired to completely reinvent yourself! The cards are re-shuffled.

1 This is a time of an awakening, a revolution…an internal and social revolution.
Everything is shaking up...everything…from November 2009 until August 2010, nothing will stay still. It can be very good, but you have to learn to navigate these changes and seize opportunity when it comes. Don't try to have it all perfect, don't try to keep the cake and eat it: change can take you to a completely new and perhaps higher level of what you are about, but you will have to let go of your security during this time. It is a time for risk, reinvention, new ideas, new concepts, new vision, and the impetus to make it happen.

Marriages may break, jobs and possessions may be lost, people may get sick, and simultaneously, new relationships may emerge, new passion may awaken, a completely new lifestyle is in the making...You are embarking on an adventure whether you know it or not, whether you like it or not. My suggestion: make peace with the idea, don't resist the adventure. If you are accepting it, you will make the best of it. If you fight and resist it, you won't win. This is what I mean by being open to risk taking...it may be time to take that "plunge!"

Risking does not mean giving in to every silly venture. It is about hearing a calling for tru...things you have denied, postponed, avoided, feared, but things you know were true. This is a time to be more truthful and follow a calling.
Collectively, while the forces of corruption and manipulation may attempt to control the course of events, they are bound to disintegrate. Scandals will continue to hit the news...Natural events will continue to shake the earth. At worst, a war may break during summer 2010 or later because dramatic changes can spur fear and conflict... But it does not have to go that way: we are creators of our own destiny in the midst of the given circumstances.

As you go through these changes, it is crucial that you take good care of your immune system because as positive as changes may be, they can overwhelm you and weaken your immune system: eat more healthy, avoid fast sugar, ingest raw garlic and onions daily (sandwich), exercise, take time out of the intensity loop, do not let negativity take over-these are basic tips that can keep you grounded.

Importantly: the situation heating up is like a piece of molten iron that can be beaten into a better form-personally and collectively. Be an ambassador of good and avoid wasting time on trivial details. For example, as we see the earth being depleted and all resources and species dwindling, people waste time arguing if global warming is or is not happening…if it is man-made or not! IT DOESN'T MATTER! What matters is that the natural world is vanishing before our eyes because of our misaligned actions: excessive pollution, deforestation, and peaking toxicity levels are a reality beyond global warming debates.

Similarly, the economy is not likely to stabilize any time soon...but perhaps, necessarily so. And so it will be with many other aspects of your life...you will not have immediate answers. Be patient and keep doing your best. When the cycle will complete, new circumstances will emerge... This cannot be artificially rushed. These dramatic times are an opportunity for us to restructure our lives, personally and collectively. As many things are being redefined, we can relinquish bad habits and attachments, open up to new ideas, and invest in what works rather than settle for immediate gratification. Patience is another essential asset.

In this context, do not expect others to change for the better if you don't do it yourself. We blame the governments and project our frustration on distant "evils," but fail to open our hearts ourselves. Being pro-active may work better than being self-righteous.
IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE:
October 30 to early December 2009
January 15 to February 15, 2010
June 25 to August 5, 2010
November 1 to December 26, 2010

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS:
Understand this is an opportunity to reinvent ourselves in a better way.
Understand there will be a price to pay, something may need to go.
If you lose something or someone, understand this is the sign of these times, use a crisis to venture into new horizons and create something new.

Understand this is an adventure and risk must be taken.

Understand that this is not a time when we can expect security-we are in transition...

Listen to your inner truth, make you life truly happen now.

Take care of your immune system: avoid bad diets in general…they render you vulnerable to opportunistic viruses.

Support your friends and family, we all shall need one another for support during this transition time.

Cultivate your spiritual practice: this is also important for your immune system.
Do your best to do good: whatever you seed now will have effect now and later.

There is probably more than can be said and explained, but you get the poin...An incredible opportunity is arising, now and throughout 2010…this type of cycle has not happened in recent history. We can expect a certain level of destruction to occur-that is the price to pay…but the prospect of experiencing an awakening and creating a better future is now within reach. We are now in the midst of a revolution-a cultural, social, and political revolution. On a personal level, it is a conceptual, emotional, and or spiritual revolution...truly, it is in the making!

"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Robert Frost (1923)

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

This beautiful (and famous) poem by Robert Frost has an enduring attraction. it has been discussed, analyzed, and written upon by many critics, who offer various interpretations. Some believe it may be a poem about death--the speaker is drawn to the woods, so "lovely, dark, and deep" with an almost Freudian yearning for "thanatos". (Freud insisted that we are all constantly torn by contrary longings--for both death and eros (love, life spirit.) Others see Frost's poem as an expression of the desire to retreat from society, with all its demands and inconveniences, and devote oneself to the top personal priority (to "follow one's bliss" to the full.) And some see the poem as a literal decription of what might indeed have happened to a lone traveler crossing snow packed landscape into the nearby village, where human warmth and conviviality were waiting.

Whatever its ultimate "meaning" might be, the poem continues to haunt our imagination, drawing as it does on the almost archetypal images of traveler, journey, horse (companion spirit) and the lure of the unknown that threatens to distract us from our primary purpose. It calls to mind the inner loneliness that most of us feel when we pause from our daily round of activities and connect with the deep layers of consciousness, the realization that we are, in fact, alone in our journey, that our daily responsibilities are in a sense distractions to keep us from recognizing the final truth of our literal isolation in this world.

Yes, most of the time we feel connection--with spirit, with human love, with service and creativity. But still, there are moments--of silence, of not doing, of meditation itself--when we know in our deepest layers of being that our journey is in fact ours alone, that we are solitary pilgrims on an unmarked path, struggling toward a goal we cannot see.

This is why beginning meditators are often overtaken by sadness and discomfort, rather than joy, in their initial trials. Once the "busy mind" is stilled and the familiar routines halted, we come face to face with the naked self--and this encounter can be rather overwhelming, for we often do not recognize this stranger within.

But, having noted all of this, there is, I think, no need to fall into despair. Life is, if nothing else, a journey of faith, a constant advance into mystery and surprise.

Frost says in another poem that news has come forth: "Word that I was in my life alone/Word I had no one left but God." Indeed, I think this observation is worth deep consideration. When all else fails or fades, when life itself seems of little worth, we can still experience that which never betrays or leaves. And those of us who know or have known the affirmation of Kundalini ("God moving through your body") will be more likely to persist and maintain inner stability even as the world crashes down around us. There is an outer reality and also an inner truth. Both worlds are real. We must not lose sight of either one, for we are compounded of both the dark source that is "lovely, dark and deep" and the bright company of the human village, the unknown and the known, the familiar and the hidden.

Distance Healing, Reiki, and the Internet

I have long been fascinated by distance healing--the kind of healing that occurs when the healer and the subject are separated in space, sometimes when they are hundreds (or more) miles apart.

My first experience of this kind of healing occurred several years ago, when the healer and I had set a time for the healing to occur. I felt something stir within a few minutes before the appointed time, and later learned that she had started early.

A friend of mine was once caught in an airport for several hours. She is up in years and was quite uncomfortable sitting on the floor (the only space available) so she called a healer/friend who sent good vibes to her through the airways (or the field, to be more accurate). My friend's discomfort quickly disappeared, and she was able to wait out the delay in peace.

Edgar Mitchell, on the film called "The Divine Matrix" that is being privately circulated, relates his own experience. He was suffering from a kidney problem, so he called a healer hundreds of miles away in Oregon and asked for help. His ailment was soon cured.

All of these stories and more are becoming more and more common. However, I did not realize that similar techniques are now being offered though the internet. If you go to the following Utube site, you can experience a group healing from a circle of reiki practitioners.

http://www.valleyreiki.com/home

I tried it last night and indeed felt many pleasant sensations as the nine-minute process continued. Of course, I may also have been reacting to the music that accompanies the sessions. And other similar sites are also available on Utube. I did not find all of these as effective as the Pioneer Valley group.

All of us have healing potential. What if we included such "long distance" transmissions as part of our daily practice? I'm sure that many of us do send prayers to our friends in need, or for the planet itself. Many Buddhists include "all sentient beings" at the conclusion of their prayers

But what if we did, in fact, regularly send healing energies into the atmosphere? Would the "field" not become stronger and more unified as a result? Would we as a group not benefit?

Even primitive humans used long distance transmission of energies. We know this because certain ancient cave drawings show the male hunters at work, with a line connecting them with their female companions back home. Actually, the line extends from the root of one to the root of the other. The root chakra is a powerful source of energy. And so is the heart. What if we created a vast field of interlinking connections of heart and heart around the world? What then?

San Francisco, the Crystal Bed, Enlightenment

Namaste!

I hope everyone had a joyous and fulfilling holiday.

I began the New Year in San Francisco, visiting with friends, going to museums and rediscovering the incredible cuisine of that city. All my time was delightful, but perhaps the highlight was my experience on the Crystal Bed. This took place in a recently established healing center there, one with lovely vibrations and lovely young people operating it. It was the sort of place you would be happy to come to just to sit quietly and meditate if nothing else.

The Crystal Bed is the creation of John of God, the famous healer who lives in Brazil. Many people make the long journey to visit him, and some experience magical healings, while others report no real changes. Since he charges nothing for his services, he obviously is not attempting to grow rich from his gifts.

The Crystal Bed, which at first existed only in his healing center, now is available in this country in various venues. The bed itself is a simple massage table with a series of clear crystals suspended over it, each located above a certain chakra. Lights of various colors shine through the crystals, each corresponding to the color of the chakra it illuminates.

My session was only 20 minutes, since I wanted merely to taste the experience and did not have time to stay longer.

When I lay down (with my eyes blindfolded to protect from the lights) I immediately saw (within) a clear image of a woman's face, someone I did not recognize. Who is this person? I wondered, since she resembled no one I knew. She was young--maybe 35 or so, with jet black hair drawn back from her slim oval face. I felt she was of some specific ethnicity, and thought she most suggested a native American. Then I slipped into a slightly different state of consciousness.

I did not feel anything similar to Kundalini energies. Rather, I felt deep relaxation coming over me, with tension and release occurring in the various chakras, from the root up. After what seemed to be a long time, the session was over.

Afterward, I shared my inner vision with Rubi and Archimedes, the delightful young operators of the center. Without saying anything, Archimedes stepped across the room and returned with a amall statuette of a winged Native American Angel, and I realized that this was indeed the face I had seen. He told me that she was often present in the center, and clearly she helped with the healing process offered there.

Then Rubi, who had sat nearby to "hold the field" during my session, said that she had also seen an inner image, this at the very end of my time on the table. As the session was closing, she saw a dervish whirling upward from my crown, spiraling toward heaven. I told her that I had recently made friends with several Sufis, and so the image seemed relevant.

Then, when I was riding a city bus a few days later, I saw a woman sitting across from me who looked identical to my inner vision. She even had her hair parted in the middle, like the woman in my mind. So it was as though I had met the "angel" in the flesh, now incarnated as an actual person.

As for Enlightenment, I did not become enlightened in San Francisco, though I did go to a moving exhibit of Thai and Burmese art at the Asian Art Museum. Again, I felt no special energies, but loved the sense of quiet emanating from the many Buddhas on display--the sculpture that most captivated me was one of Buddha's chief disciples, resting at his feet and gazing upward in loving adoration. He somehow reminded me of many Asian monks I have seen, small androgynous males quietly loving and gentle.

Then, this morning, I was perusing a website of a spiritual teacher who asserts that if only 5% of the population became enlightened, that would effect the sudden transformation of the entire world. He also stated that the age of gurus was past, and that we must all now share with one another as we advance together into the new stage of humanity. I think he is right. And he repeated the lesson we are hearing again and again from many quarters--we are all one, part of one creation, yoked in common purpose.

So--as the new year proceeds, let us all love and bless one another, and together create our own crystal field of enlightenment as we prepare for the change that is even now occurring worldwide. This is indeed why we came.

Glorious New Year to all!

Dorothy
