The Lover (for Mary Oliver)
The Lover
“My business is loving the world.”
Mary Oliver
She fills her work
with the names of things--
flowers, plants, animals
whose designations I have never
even heard of--
all this in order to love the world.
She goes forth daily, it seems,
into that internal paradise
awakened by that outward
exploration,
as if she touched
and tasted
each thing,
drew each into her body,
transformed it into
her own being,
what she is,
everything she knows.
Thus she inhabits
a shining universe,
a limitless realm
of things blossoming, moving,
opening in radiance,
filling her spirit,
her mind,
with all that light.
