The Poet's Face (Robyn Sarah)
The Poet’s Face
(Robyn Sarah)
And so there she is,
with her big glasses
and her hat,
her somewhat plain but
clearly intelligent face,
someone I could have
gone to graduate school with,
the features of someone I
once loved.
And she is smiling,
letting a bit of sunlight
into her eyes,
her ready mouth,
mischievous and glad
with a wry pleasure,
as if she knows a secret
hidden from the world, saying,
even though much
of the evidence points
the other way,
life can be good,
it can offer succulents
and savories,
little packets of joy,
boons to keep desolation
at bay,
even amidst the clutter,
the dust,
the silence of the moon
strolling over
the empty rooms
at night.
