The Secret
The Secret
(inspired by Denise Levertov)
I think there is a secret,
and yes, sometimes
some of us find
it and breathe deep
and sigh, at last,
I’ve found what I’ve been
looking for
for so long.
But then we mostly
forget
what it was
exactly,
and what we were doing
when it came upon us
like that,
opening up unexpectedly
like a midnight bloom,
and can’t really remember
how it felt,
or how to find it again.
But then sometimes
it comes back once more--
the tree flowering
beneath the window,
that bit of music
swelling like scent
through the house,
gazing into the eyes
of someone we love.
Oh, yes,
the secret is there.
But it is
nothing permanent,
it ebbs and flows,
like the tides
against the shore,
the birds going south
when the weather turns.
