The Lives of the Soul (poem)

The Lives of the Soul

are enigmatic, ethereal, ineffable--
as hard to capture
as catching the leaping fountain of God
in a teacup,
the flight of the eagle
into the sun,
the thunder of hooves
on the prairie
when the ears are closed
with candle wax.

The Soul arrives
in its own good time,
lets you know it is there
with a kiss on the lips,
a hand against your
breast.

If you can feel this,
then you know
that the Soul has come at last,
bringing its own
true gifts,
its inexplicable mercy.
