poem by Hazrat Inayat Khan
Art without beauty,
poetry without inspiration,
music without feeling,
religion without devotion,
mysticism without ecstasy
are like a lake without water.
-- Hazrat Inayat Khan
(I wonder how much of the above applies to the contemporary aesthetic scene. Sometimes it is indeed as though the "lake of inspiration" has been emptied out and little is left but a jaded sensibility, offering "notions" instead of art.)
