Sufis in Trance (poem by Dorothy)

Sufis in Trance

Now it is almost end of May
and nothing we can do
will bring back winter.

For months,
we lived inside
and monitored the distant
mountains--
their slow embrace of snow
and occasional flashes
of sun—copper coins
flung against the wind,
bright reflections
of who we want to be.

Today, waiting for
the spring storm
to arrive,
the trees are tossing
their hair
like Sufis in trance,
or waves in a frenzy
of attack against the
stolid rocks
of the shore.

Who will we be next year,
when the snows
come back again?
