Another Turning
Another Turning
Another turning of the cycle,
and what has happened?
The trees,
yellow, scarlet,
flaring in the crisp air,
the plants going underground
where the dark mysteries lie,
everything in readiness
for the long sleep
ahead.
Whatever happens,
we know that we will bear witness,
in this and perhaps even another year—
our own mysteries unveiling
even as the snow blankets
the world we see from
our window,
things we love
and others we did not wish to know,
the scent of blue smoke in the air,
birds departing,
and the wind crying lamentations
down the chimneys
such as people used to have.
