Jan Elvee––"The Pathless Woods––poem
The Pathless Woods
Yes, the pathless woods are daunting
as reality or metaphor.
Without guides who know the Way,
you could wander endlessly,
lonely and increasingly desperate.
And perhaps you've already been advised,
even if you don't believe it,
that deliverance from your ceaseless straggling
can only be found in the desperation you struggle to avoid.
How much longer will you trudge,
lost and proud, before you stop
stock-still and sink into utter desolation?
Then the guides will speak, sotto voce,
through your own heart's desires.
Be ever so quiet now.
Listen vigilantly.
Their whispers will lead you.
