Penny Hackett Evans––Silence––poem
Silence
is a shy woman who wears gray,
has laryngitis and is easily frightened.
She asks “What really matters?”
and does not tolerate easy answers,
prefers the unsayable.
Though she is eternally around,
she only appears by special invitation
and sometimes not even then.
But when she comes,
she always brings a gift.
Meditators and monks know her deeply
as do deer and mice.
I want to give her a tiny engagement ring,
so she could know how deep
are my intentions to love her.
