Wild Animals
Wild Animals
What they have
is an aliveness
that escapes us.
Every moment a potential
catastrophe,
each step
a possible betrayal.
Always they are poised,
ready to leap
or spring away
from a hovering terror
into a future
of rest, silence
in the den.
How the world must
appear to them,
with its glorious array
of sounds and smells
rain arriving majestically through the trees,
shimmering snowfalls.
But they hardly have time
to notice,
so busy are they
just staying alive.
We too
have our distractions,
obstacles that keep
us from our goal,
our secret destination
which is our home.
