What Happens––poem by Dorothy
What Happens
You know what happens.
Reach a certain age
and everything runs
together,
a bundle of memories
racing down hill
to an unseen
destination.
The children down the street
who "whipped you with blankets"
when you were six,
the teacher who inspired you at sixteen
and set your course,
the time you got first place
in the essay contest,
the day in the forest
with your new lover,
All blended and merged
like a painting
that never quite dried,
like an antique book of photos,
reminding you
of who you once were,
what you then became.
