Some Modern Thinkers
They keep their skirts well away
from the fire of transcendence.
They do not want to be scorched
by what does not exist.
They are adept at maintaining
a skeptical attitude,
testing everything in the alembic
of their own careful
scrutiny.
Thus they are able
to point out the universal flaws
in almost everything.
To do otherwise
might suggest that they were shallow,
too apt to look on the bright side
when it is evident to any astute observer
that the shadow, like dark matter,
defines most of reality,
and one must assume a
stoic attitude
and accept despair
as our given fate.
