Jan Elvee––"Longing" (poem)

r

Longing

“By the waters of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept
when we remembered Jerusalem.”
Psalm 137

Once in a while,
I sit myself down
to read a few Psalms,
ancient poetry of spiritual longing,
a lone human voice calling out to an absent God,
and often I weep from astonishment
at how deeply these words speak to me.

We weep for that place
from which we’ve been exiled,
that place we know exists
because we long for it,
that place beyond space and time and limitation,
that place where we become fully who we are,
that sacred place we might call God or Love or Wholeness or Home.
